Glossary of Terms

Some Terms and Meanings
(Just a small list of some PM jargon...)

MINS "Machine Identification Numbering System" This unique numbering system identifies the equipment and/or facilities that you will be performing maintenance on. All information should tie to these numbers. This field can be up to 16 characters long and is supported by other fields such as class, type, manufacturer, etc.
CMMS "Computerized Maintenance Management System" This is some type of software programming that constitutes an application that will allow you to document all pertinent PM information and automatically generate the PM & CWO work tasks.
PM & CWO This is merely the two major types of work orders you use. PM being a work order of the "Preventative Maintenance" type, and CWO being a work order of the "Corrective" or "Repair" type.
UPTIME Time that your equipment operates properly, performing the task that it was designed to do.
MTBF "Mean Time Between Failure" This is the average time between failures and is computed from the amount of time the machinery is operated divided by the number of failures during that time.  90 hours operating ÷ 9 failures  =  Avg 10 hours between failures. 10 Hrs MTBF 
MTTR "Mean Time To Repair" This is the average time to repair and is computed from the total amount of time taken to repair the machinery divided by the number of failures during that time.   63 minutes to repair  ÷  9  failures  =  Avg 7 Minutes To Repair.   7 Min MTTR
